Christine Bowlby and Artonya Gemmill will lead the new Enhanced Digital and Guided Education (EDGE) program for the 2020-21 school year
Artonya Gemmill and Christine Bowlby have been named as the new administrators to support Salem-Keizer Public School’s (SKPS) new online program, EDGE: Enhanced Digital and Guided Education.
On July 13, SKPS officially opened applications for EDGE, quickly sparking interest with more than 600 applications submitted within the first week from students representing all grade levels from every school in the district.
EDGE will provide students with high quality, rigorous and well-rounded learning opportunities, including instructional supports, English language development support and more. Through the support of a brand-new learning management system, students enrolled in the EDGE program will pair teacher-led instruction with family-supported and independent at-home application and learning, while still staying deeply connected to their school communities.
“We are very excited for Artonya and Christine to lead the EDGE program for the 2020-21 school year,” said Assistant Superintendent Kraig Sproles. “Both Christine and Artonya provide a wealth of knowledge in their roles, bringing experience from both the elementary and secondary levels, and how to best support our students receiving special education services and English language supports. They both have a demonstrated passion for innovation and a true dedication to leading our teachers through new experiences.”
Artonya and Christine both currently serve as elementary principals in the Keizer area, and will continue to support their schools with reentry planning as new administrators for Clear Lake and Keizer elementary are announced.

Artonya Gemmill y Christine Bowlby han sido nombradas como las nuevas directoras para apoyar el nuevo programa en línea de las Escuelas Públicas de Salem-Keizer (SKPS, por sus siglas en inglés), EDGE: Enhanced Digital and Guided Education.
El 13 de julio, SKPS abrió oficialmente las solicitudes para EDGE, lo que despertó rápidamente el interés de la comunidad, con más de 600 solicitudes enviadas dentro de la primera semana con estudiantes que representan a todos los niveles de grado de todas las escuelas del distrito.
El programa en línea EDGE, brindará a los estudiantes oportunidades de aprendizaje riguroso, completo y de alta calidad, que incluyen apoyo instructivo, apoyo para el desarrollo del idioma inglés y más. A través de este nuevo sistema de aprendizaje, los estudiantes inscritos en el programa EDGE combinarán la instrucción dirigida por el maestro, con la aplicación y el aprendizaje en el hogar, apoyados por sus familias, mientras se mantienen profundamente conectados con sus comunidades escolares.

Ambas tienen una pasión demostrada por la innovación y una verdadera dedicación para guiar a nuestros maestros a través de nuevas experiencias”.
Artonya y Christine actualmente prestan sus servicios como directores de primaria en el área de Keizer, y continuarán apoyando a sus escuelas con la planificación de reingreso a medida que se anuncien los nuevos directores para las escuelas Clear Lake y Keizer.

EDGE: Enhanced Digital and Guided Education
Artonya’s career in education first began when she was an instructional assistant with the San Mateo-Foster City School District prior to becoming an elementary school full-inclusion teacher. As a full-inclusion teacher, Artonya taught grades K-2. Gemmill continued her educational journey at San Francisco State University where she received her master’s degree in special education.
After eight years of service in the education field in Northern California and one year of service in the McMinnville School District, Artonya joined the SKPS team in 2007 as a high school special education teacher. Starting in 2008, Gemmill served as an assistant principal at West Salem and South Salem high schools. In 2013, she began her role as the principal of Brush College Elementary school and most recently, served as principal at Clear Lake Elementary School.
Artonya views a collaborative school environment as an important part of building successful learners. She believes having strong relationships between students, staff and parents will foster that success.
Christine Bowlby | Principal
EDGE: Enhanced Digital and Guided Education
Christine brings more than 19 years of experience with SKPS, most recently serving as principal at Keizer Elementary. Beginning her career with SKPS in 2001, Christine worked as a kindergarten and first-grade teacher at Fruitland Elementary before transitioning to Swegle Elementary where she taught fourth-grade before becoming an instructional coach at the school.
While teaching, Bowlby earned a master’s degree in education with endorsements in both reading and ESOL. In 2012, she accepted her first principal assignment at Washington Elementary where she had the privilege of serving for five years before moving to Keizer Elementary in 2017.
Christine is very excited to embark on this new adventure and looks forward to working with and supporting students and families as they pursue this educational opportunity.
